San Diego Comic-Con: Day 2 isn't over yet!

Superfro33 here for Bavarian Erin with a very important add on to the end of our Day 2 events. Just when you thought the day would end on a less than stellar note, Comic-Con has a way of making magic happen and completely reverses your attitude. Erin caught wind of a super lowkey "happening" going on this evening. It seems that as a viral marketing promo for Disney's "Tron Legacy", there was a completely 80's style arcade setup somewhere in the streets outside of the Con. We tracked down the address and even though we were moments away from turning in for the night, we decided to give it a shot and see what it was all about. We headed out and sure enough found the location. Outside was a group of 50 people or so waiting in line to get in a closed door. The only thing marking the area was a bright neon sign. Once the previous group of folks filed out we were allowed in and greated by 80's music and tons of old school arcade games all for the playing.
After a few songs the lights all began to flicker, and shortly thereafter, the wall with the Tron video game on it actually opened up. Eveyone was ushered through and we were treated to concept art of the new light cycle with the new theme playing over the speaker system. Turning the final corner we were greated with an actual 1/1 scale model of the new light cycle. Upon exiting we were also handed our choice of a "Flynn's Arcade" or "Flynn Lives" t-shirt. All in all a pretty awesome experience, and an great reminder of why Comic-Con is in fact worth it. Faith restored. (But not in Fox. Those folks are still utter douchebags.)

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 2!

I feel like I need to give you a little set-up to really understand Comic-Con, for those of you who have never been there.

First of all, the convention center is huge, as long as 5 city blocks and two stories tall. Walking from one end to the other takes about 20 minutes without factoring in crowds. Comic-Con allows 125,000 attendees in each day, not including all the staff, security, exhibitors, special guests and other employees, who number...oh let's just call it 5,000 more.

Outside the convention center there are only 2 places to cross the street from the trolley or the parkades to the convention center. Here is what it looks like to cross the street in the morning.

Once inside the convention center, there are several different "areas". Starting from the left you have the video game areas, then the vinyl toy area, below that the fine illustrators section and above that the "artist alley" section, then the middle is all TV and movie studios, then the "independent" press area, the "small press" area, the silver and golden age comic area and then the general retailers. The aisles are numbered by the 100s from 100 up to 5800 with several giant aisles perpendicular to those.

So, the place is crawling with people, some pushing strollers, some in costumes, some carrying babies, some who have not showered, some who are too young to wipe their own bottoms, some who have a backpack plus are carrying 2 poster tubes and 3 totes and some who just don't care at all where they are going or who is in their way. Most of these people are looking around, not at where they are going but instead looking for free items to grab by the handful and shove in their already over flowing totes.

The throngs are especially thick in the T.V. and movie areas where the studios trot out their "talent" and put them on display to sign autographs and smile for cameras. During these signings it's nearly impossible to pass through without hearing the security staff yell "KEEP MOVING! NO STOPPING!" As if we wanted to be at a standstill ass cheek to crotch with sweaty strangers (weeeelllll, some might like that).

Now, if you want to be lucky enough to get in line for one of these autograph sessions be prepared to jump through hoops. Each studio has their own rules but often they involve getting a paper ticket. That ticket might be given out hours or days ahead of the signing or a certain location, like upstairs a quarter of a mile away from the booth. Even with that ticket in your hand plan on getting on line at least an hour before the scheduled signing time. And don't expect the signing to get started on time either. The talent has to work their way through the crowd too.

It was thanks to this whole autograph signing bullshit that my day, nay my weekend, was derailed. Long before Comic-Con started I knew that I needed to plan one thing to do on Saturday, the busiest day. I picked a signing with the Fox show Fringe, who were scheduled to sign at 5:00 on Saturday.

On Thursday I was told that tickets for the signing would be given out Saturday morning. On Friday morning they had a ticket schedule posted saying that tickets were going to be given out at 2:00 Friday instead of Saturday. When I arrived at the booth at 2:00 on Friday I was told that the tickets were already handed out an hour before and they were all gone. I was not pleased and neither were the other people who had showed up. It's was a bunch of bullshit and I'm still pissed. My Friday was ruined by my anger and now my Saturday was destined to be ruined as well.

I'm sure there is a lesson in all of this, like don't trust a god damn thing anyone associated with Fox tells you. Seriously, don't.

Even so, some good came out of my day. My dear friend Matt Huseman flew in from Denver for his first Comic-Con. Please enjoy these photos of him with some costumed folks.

I got to spend a moment with the incredibly nice and utterly huggable Robert Kirkman. He's comic book royalty.

A couple of celebrity sightings peppered the day;

Adam Baldwin, from Chuck, Firefly and My Bodyguard(which honestly, he gave me the creeps in, can't say exactly why)

Jackie Earl Healey from Watchmen

Robert Englund, also known as Freddy Kreuger in Nightmare on Elm Street

And lastly, the great Kiefer Sutherland, "Ace Merrill" in the fantastic Stand By Me, apparently he's been in some other stuff, some T.V. show or something. It's on Fox, I probably won't watch it (yes I will).

Another great meal is resting nicely in my belly. Red Pearl Kitchen offered up General Tso's Pork Belly and I gladly accepted, thank you very much, I will not be forgetting you soon.

And one last photo that I think will sum up most of the day.

Nighty night puddin'!!

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 1 was BRUTAL!

I gotta tell you, San Diego is...FRIGGIN' BUSY. Busier than ever before. It's nuts-o. And today was the Twilight panel so the place was crawling with women looking to get their Robert Pattinson on.

Navigating the exhibit floor took time and patience, both of which I was lacking in. In lieu of raking over the negatives I'm going to just polish up the highlights and share them with you.

My favorite person from The Sarah Silverman Show, and renowned for his massive web-project "The Steve Agee 5000", Steve Agee was there. He was sooooooo friendly. Seriously, I was totally intimidated, I almost didn't approach him, but he was cordial and nice and cute and funny and totally knocked my socks off. You should follow him on Twitter (@steveagee) and watch for the new season of The Sarah Silverman Show, filming now! Oh! And you can hear his voice in the upcoming video game that you may have heard of....Brutal Legend!

Electronic Arts (EA), set up a great gaming lounge across the street from the convention center. They were showcasing some of their new wares including Left 4 Dead 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. They were very generous with their swag, multiple free T-shirts were secured by Superfro33 and myself (watch for future contests!)! Here are some shots of Superfro33 playing Left 4 Dead 2 and also their Battlefield 1943 display.

And speaking of Left 4 Dead 2, this cute couple is decked out as Louis and Zoey from Left 4 Dead 1!

Here is Superfro33, having a moment with Xbox's own Major Nelson.

And here is yours truly chatting it up with Geoff Keighley. Both were very polite and it was a pleasure to meet them.

There was a Bioshock 2 display, replicating an online office stocked with clues that will tie into the game.

On that note, I'm off to bed, I need a serious recharging before I take to the exhibit floor tomorrow!

San Diego: Preview Night

Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con was jam packed. For the first time ever Superfro33 and I were overwhelmed by the mobs of people and the heavily taxed air-conditioning.

Even so, we managed to snap a few quick pics that I wanted to share.

This is the "Sails Pavilion" where attendees pick up their badges and line up to get in.

The fine and dandy gents from Kirby Krackle were representing. We were able to snag an autographed copy of their CD for a future PseudoRadio contest!

Superfro33 got to play some Brutal Legend and declared "IT IS @#$%ING AWESOME!"

We spotted these gems at the Lego Rock Band demo stage. We have not yet had time to demo it ourselves but will let you know when we do!

For you comic fans, here's Darwyn Cooke, signing copies of his new book, Richard Stark's "The Hunter".

That's all for tonight, watch for more updates from me, Bavarian Erin, coming to you from sunny San Diego!

San Diego: En Garde!

Greetings from Sunny San Diego! Bavarian Erin here, roving reporter, setting out to bring you periodic but interesting updates from the galaxy's largest pop culture event; The San Diego Comic-Con.

For 40 years San Diego has been opeing their arms to masses of like-minded individuals, many in costume. Anime fiends, Furries, Trekkies, aspiring comic writers, fledgling artists and plain old nerds, all are welcome for 4 delicious days to cavort, question and spend cash.

The welcome mat is rolled out in all the neighborhoods adjacent to the convention center with signs and banners declaring that convention attendees are indeed welcome, even in costume.

Below are a few snapshots of evidence that San Diego truly does appreciate Comic-Con and it's boost to the local economy. Every tapas bar and watering hole wants a bit of those hard earned dollars.

Keep your eyes peeled for more photos as Comic-Con progresses.
